FAQs

A few things to know before you commit…

Out of the 3 mountains tackled, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain on the three peaks challenge, and so in theory this peak is considered the hardest. However, many find Scafell Pike the hardest peak on this event, despite it being the smallest mountain of the three.

The reason is that Scafell Pike is tackled at night. You’ll have to fight against the urge to sleep. Plus, because Scafell Pike is the middle peak, you’re not fresh, but you’re also not riding the high of having the finish line in sight.

Part of the fun of the challenge for a lot of groups is to aim to complete it in 24 hours. Experts say you should leave:

5 hours for Ben Nevis

4 hours for Scafell Pike, from Wasdale Head

4 hours for Snowdon

11 hours for driving (yikes)

There’s a good 34km of walking (16km Ben Nevis, 8.5km up Scafell Pike and 10km up Snowdon) that’s assuming you complete the shortest routes via the Ben Nevis Mountain Track, Scafell Pike from Wasdale and Snowdon via the Pyg Track from Pen y Pass.

The ascent is 1370m up Ben Nevis, 900m up Scafell Pike and 800m up Snowdon – so at least by doing it in this direction, you’ll be getting the toughest route out of the way first. The total ascent is around 300om! That’s tough!
